Is Flux Core Better Than MIG? FAQ for E71T-GS Welding Wire

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
A practical FAQ comparing self-shielded flux core welding wire with gas-shielded solid welding wire, including documented applications, specifications, current requirements, and selection limitations.
Neither process is universally better. The suitable choice depends on the wire, welding setup, workpiece, and application. The E71T-GS product is a self-shielded flux core welding wire for lightweight structures and applications such as galvanized sheet metal, automobile sheet-metal repair, roofing sheet metal, prefab building fabrication, ornamental iron, farm implement repairs, and general fabrication. By contrast, the gas-shielded solid welding wire is used with CO2 gas shielding and is used for applications ranging from sheet metal and steel pipes to structural steel parts, thick plates, pipelines, and some high-strength steel structures. These application differences are more useful than a blanket claim that one process is better.
The product is identified as Self Shielded Flux Core Welding Wire E71T-GS, and its listed current is DC-. However, the same published usage notes state that gas flow is generally 20–25 L/min when welding and give a dry extension length of 15–25 mm. Therefore, confirm the exact wire, machine setup, and applicable operating instructions before treating “flux core” as permission to weld without external gas. The material provided here does not establish a general gas-free rule for every flux-cored wire.
The diameters are 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6 mm. E71T-GS is an AWS, low-carbon-steel type with DC- current for welding lightweight structures. The product offers all-position welding, smooth arc action, low spatter, full slag coverage, easy slag removal, and excellent performance. Its deposited-metal values are 530 MPa tensile strength and 22% elongation. These values belong to the product and should not be generalized to other flux-cored wires.
The gas-shielded solid wire product uses DC+ and is available in several models and diameters. CO2 gas-shielded welding is used in industries including automobile, construction machinery, shipbuilding, metallurgy equipment, bridges, petrochemical, boiler and pressure-vessel manufacturing, and rolling stock. Advantages include high production efficiency, low power consumption, all-position operation, and suitability for thin, medium, and thick plates. Diameters are 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, and 1.6 mm for several models.
For procurement, compare the required application, workpiece condition, shielding arrangement, current polarity, wire diameter, and documented mechanical requirements. Do not substitute one wire for another solely because both are used with a wire-feed welding machine.
